  • Overview

Perhaps the last “off the beaten path” spot in Europe, Moldova lies on the fault line between East and West.  A country barely even known by its neighbors, Moldova lauds a surprising number of sights not seen anywhere else.  From a monastery dug into a cliff to a city of half built mansions, Moldova’s unique personality awaits to be introduced to the world.  Boasting soil that could feed nearly any crop, Moldova’s fruits and vegetables are some of the most flavorful on earth.  It is the wine, however, that makes Moldova proud.  Many of the population make their own batches and are eager to share with visitors.  Dozens of wineries dot the landscape, including the Guinness-certified largest wine cellar on earth.  With the majority of the country’s universities in Chisinau, this capital is a young and vibrant city hosting a surprising diversity of food and entertainment.  Although Club Med travelers should steer clear, Moldova’s rustic throwback veneer is unlike anywhere else on earth.

Andrew Johnson &
Sarah Olia
Sarah and Andrew met in college while studying at Valparaiso University.  A couple of Midwest suburbanites, he from Kansas she from Wisconsin, they opted for the non-cubical path after graduation.  After a year teaching in Korea, they answered the call to service in Moldova.  Teaching in a Glodeni school and living with a host family for the full two years, they left with more stories than they could put in a book.  After finishing in 2008 they moved to Boston to pursue Masters degrees.  Andrew studied International Affairs at Northeastern and Sarah studied Language and Literacy at Harvard.  Never the traditionalists, they celebrated their graduations with a whirlwind trip back to Moldova to research this guide.
