It’s hard to find a nation that dances to a friendlier, more laid-back tempo than Dominica. The island rises majestically out of a turquoise-blue sea and provides a visually stunning backdrop to an easy-going way of life.  Although you won’t find your typical Caribbean beach vacation here, you will find a country that begs you to discover and engage with its people, land and rich culture.

It was recently rated the fourth happiest country in the world and after visiting you are likely to understand many of the reasons why.  With its rainforest covered mountains, unspoiled reefs, hidden beaches, natural hot springs, waterfalls galore, and 365 pristine rivers, Dominica’s rugged good looks will likely make you weak in the knees. As the national saying goes: “Aprés Bondie C’est la Ter.”  After God, is the land.

Five Stars AWESOME BOOK!
Anna McCanse has created a superb depiction of Dominica, "nature island." McCanse's unique perspective as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Dominica adds to the books wealth of cultural references. I couldn't ask for a better travel guide to Dominica!

Five Stars Like a Treasure Chest
This book is incredible! It is filled with little secret treasures for exploration and discovery. I lived in Dominica in 2006-2007. This book manages to describe the island exactly as it is: laid back, fun, uninhibited and quirky. The book lists shops and towns that no other book had any record of- very impressive. The locals will surely be pleased if you purchase this book and follow some of McCanse's hidden treeasures. I particularly like the information on the East coast and south. Excellent!

Five Stars Great guide, beautiful country
Wow! Was I ever happy to discover this travel guide! I visited Dominica in 2006 and at that time there was no current, comprehensive guide to that beautiful country. The only map I could find was hand-drawn. We are hoping to travel to Dominica again soon so I was very pleased to find an up-to-date guide and ordered it immediately. It's better than I ever expected--very thorough with lots of great maps and an excellent hiking guide. The author clearly knows the country well and has a very readable style. I especially liked all the extra bits of miscellaneous, but useful, information. Just reading it brought back very happy memories of a wonderful vacation, and now I'm more eager than ever to go back again. Highly recommended.

Five Stars Great guide book
This book was a treat to read after our visit to Dominica. It is an invaluable guide for visitors to this beautiful island and includes so many "insider" tips that will make readers future visits even more enjoyable.

Five Stars Answers to all of my Dominica questions
I'm about to head out on a trip to Dominica in a few days and have recently picked up McCanse's book...which, so far has been the most informative bit of travel literature I've found written about the island.

Descriptions and detail are much more comprehensive than what I've found in other books...also, it is nice to have everything in one place.

About the Author

Anna McCanse
After teaching for several years in California, Anna decided to take her skills on the road and joined the Peace Corps where she served in Dominica from 2006-2008 as an education volunteer.  When she wasn’t working at her village’s primary school she could be found swimming beneath waterfalls,  jumping into rivers, hiking up mountains, learning to play steel-pan drums, playing with the kids in her village and reading lots and lots of books.  She was overjoyed to have the opportunity to travel back to Dominica to write this guide and share her favorite places with everyone.   She’s also happy that she can stop assaulting innocent bystanders with her stories of Dominica and can now just say “hey-go buy the book!”

zak_kleinZak Klein
Zak originally discovered Dominica nine years ago after a friend’s suggestion that  he and the island might be perfect for each other.  He relocated to a tiny village on Dominica’s quiet east coast to settle a small hillside plot with a hand-built shack.  His friend was correct.  He embraced the local rhythms of waking, walking, working and bathing accented with notes of laughter and fresh harvest from the soil and the sea.

Since that original adventure Zak worked several years as an instructor for wilderness expeditions across North America for Outward Bound and the National Outdoor Leadership School.  Currently, he continues the mission of helping people explore the outdoors in San Francisco with Bay Area Wilderness Training.  After several long re-visits to Dominica and continued exploration, Zak is grateful to share his local knowledge and outdoor expertise to explore the Nature Island’s ancient wild and modern trails with readers.
